Why Compound exists

Compound is a UK personal-finance publication with one job: to make the boring, proven path to long-term wealth clear enough that anyone can follow it.

Money advice tends to come in two unhelpful flavours. There's the hype, get-rich-quick, hot stocks, crypto moonshots, whatever's loud this week. And there's the impenetrable, jargon-thick, hedged into meaninglessness, written as if you already have a finance degree. Most people are left somewhere in the middle, guessing, and quietly worrying they're getting it wrong.

We think the truth is calmer and far more reassuring than either extreme: building wealth is mostly a handful of dull decisions, made early and repeated for years. Spend less than you earn, clear expensive debt, use the tax shelters you're given, own the whole market cheaply, and automate the lot. That's not a secret, it's just rarely explained clearly, because "be patient and boring" doesn't sell.

What we believe

• Wealth is built slowly. Anyone promising fast is selling something.
• Costs and taxes matter more than cleverness. The fee you don't notice and the allowance you don't use cost more than any stock pick would ever make you.
• The boring option is usually the right one. A low-cost index fund and a standing order beat almost everything flashier.
• You should understand your own money. We explain the why, not just the what, so you can decide for yourself.

Who writes Compound

Compound is written by Tom, an ACA-qualified chartered accountant based in London. He has spent more than a decade in senior commercial finance roles, partnering CFOs and executive teams: building financial models, analysing businesses, and turning complicated numbers into decisions.

That professional discipline is the point of Compound. Everything here is grounded in the actual UK rules (HMRC thresholds, real allowances, the current 2026/27 tax year), checked against official sources before it is published, and kept up to date when the rules change. The calculators use the same kind of modelling he builds professionally: exact, tested, and free.
