How your take-home pay is worked out

Your gross salary is reduced by four things: any pension you sacrifice, income tax, National Insurance, and student-loan repayments. What's left is your take-home pay. If you pay yourself from your own limited company rather than an employer, the trade-off is a different one: see dividend versus salary. We show it both annually and as a monthly average.

The biggest lever you control is pension salary sacrifice: because it comes off before tax and NI, it cuts your tax bill as well as building your pension. If you earn over £100,000, it can also rescue your personal allowance, see the 60% tax trap calculator, and the guide to ISA vs pension.

Frequently asked questions

Is the monthly figure what actually lands in my account?

Roughly, yes. We divide your annual take-home by 12. Real payslips vary a little month to month (bonuses, tax-code changes), but this is the correct average monthly position over the year.

How do I include my pension?

Enter your contribution as a percentage of gross salary, the way most workplace schemes express it. Auto-enrolment sets a minimum of 5% from you and 3% from your employer. Because salary sacrifice comes off before income tax and National Insurance, it cuts your tax bill as well as building your pension, and the results show the pounds going in each month.

Does this work for Scotland?

Yes. Pick Scotland in the "Where you live" selector and it switches to the six Scottish bands for 2026/27, from the 19% starter rate up to the 48% top rate. National Insurance and student loans are the same across the UK.
